Sa'd ibn Ubadah, chief of the Khazraj, was known for his generosity. When his mother passed away he said, "Messenger of Allah, Umm Sa'd has died; what form of sadaqah is best?" He replied, "Water (is best)." He dug a well and said, "It is for Umm Sa'd," and the water jars of Sa'd served the people of Madinah long afterwards. Al-Samhudi placed his fortified house near Masjid al-Nabawi, beside the Saqifah of Banu Sa'idah where Abu Bakr al-Siddiq was chosen as caliph. Nothing of the house survives. Its site lies about 600 metres north-west of the Green Dome, next to the site of the Saqifah of Banu Sa'idah.
