This was one of the two public hammams of Ottoman Makkah, built for Sultan Suleyman by the architect Sinan. Residents remembered an inscription dated 960 AH, and travellers from Evliya Çelebi in 1672 to Burckhardt in 1815 described the two hammams of the city, Burckhardt naming this one after its quarter. The hammam was still standing in 1984, though by then it was used as shops and a bank. Its site, about 290 metres north-east of the Ka'bah, has since been built over by the enlarged Haram and the buildings around it.
