This maqam in the Souq al-Hibal area of Basra commemorates the journey of Imam Ali al-Rida, who was summoned from Madinah to Khurasan by the caliph al-Ma'mun in about 200 AH. Some accounts take his route through Basra, and this site marks the place where he is said to have stopped. It is a place of visitation in the old market district of the city, visited by people from across Basra.
