About Haydar-Khana Mosque

The Haydar-Khana mosque stands on the site of an older mosque of the Abbasid caliph al-Nasir. The present building was raised between 1819 and 1827 by Dawud Pasha, the last Mamluk governor of Baghdad, and it gave its name to the surrounding Haydarkhana quarter. In 1920 it was a meeting place for the gatherings that led to the Iraqi revolt. It is known for its large blue-tiled dome resting on eight windows and its tiled minaret, with walls 2.5 m thick and three marble doorways. It stands on Rashid Street, near Mutanabbi Street and the old cafés of Haydarkhana.
