Ali al-Khawwas lived in Cairo in the tenth century AH and came from a family of al-Burullus in the north of the Delta. He took his name from weaving palm fronds, which he did for his living, and was known for his generosity and humility, spending his Fridays serving the mosques and giving alms. He could not read or write, yet he became the master of Abd al-Wahhab al-Sha'rani, who recorded his teachings in several books. His mosque and tomb stand in Haret al-Khawwas in al-Gamaliya, a short walk outside Bab al-Futuh.
