The al-Bahr mosque is one of the best-known mosques of Damietta. Its name means the mosque of the river, as Egyptians often call the Nile al-bahr, and it stands on the eastern bank of the Nile in the centre of the city. It was renewed in 1009 AH, in the Ottoman period, rebuilt in 1967 and restored again in 1997. The present building is in an Andalusian style, with five domes, two minarets and an attached library, and it covers about 1,600 square metres. It overlooks the Nile corniche, a short walk from the al-Mu'ini mosque and madrasa and the old mosque of Amr ibn al-As.
