About Abu al-Dhahab Mosque

The mosque of Muhammad Bey Abu al-Dhahab was built in 1774 by the Mamluk bey who ruled Egypt under the Ottomans, directly opposite al-Azhar. It was designed as a mosque, a madrasa and a takiyya linked to al-Azhar, with a library for its students. Its great dome follows the Mamluk tradition, and its minaret is modelled on that of Sultan al-Ghuri. It stands on al-Azhar Street, facing the main entrance of al-Azhar.
