The Čaršijska Masjid stands in the centre of Prijedor. The date of the first mosque here is not known for certain, but it is thought to go back to the reign of Sultan Mahmud I in the eighteenth century, and inscriptions above the door record restorations in 1840 and 1904. The oldest surviving headstone in its harem is dated 1832. The mosque was destroyed in 1992 and was rebuilt on the same spot, reopening on 2 August 2008. It was declared a national monument in 2003 and is again the main mosque of the Muslims of Prijedor.
