The Gazi Husrev Bey Masjid was built in 1530-31 by Gazi Husrev Bey, the Ottoman governor of Bosnia who did more than anyone to shape Sarajevo, and it stands at the heart of the Baščaršija among the madrasa, library, covered bazaar and other buildings of his endowment. It is the largest historic mosque in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and its builder is thought to have been Acem Ali, an Ottoman architect of Persian descent. Its main dome rises 26 metres, and the courtyard holds a fountain for wudu and the turbe of Gazi Husrev Bey himself. In 1898 it became one of the first mosques in the world to be lit by electricity. The mosque was heavily damaged during the siege of Sarajevo and restored from 1996, and it remains the city's main congregational mosque.
