The Atik Masjid, known locally as the Sultan Suleiman Atik Masjid, is the oldest mosque of Bijeljina. It was first built in the middle of the sixteenth century, soon after the Ottomans took control of the region, and over the centuries it served as a fortress in time of war and was even turned into a church during a period of Austrian rule in the eighteenth century. The mosque was destroyed in 1993 and was later rebuilt on its old site in the centre of the town, where it again serves the Muslims of Bijeljina. It is a short walk from the main square.
