Sayyiduna Muʿādh ibn Jabal al-Anṣārī al-Khazrajī (RA) was a distinguished Companion of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ and one of the greatest scholars among the Sahabah. He accepted Islam while still young, attended the Second Pledge of al-ʿAqabah and participated in the Battle of Badr and the major campaigns alongside Nabi Muhammad ﷺ. He was renowned for his deep knowledge of the Qur’an, Islamic law and matters of the lawful and unlawful, and was among the Companions from whom the Muslims were encouraged to learn the Qur’an. Nabi Muhammad ﷺ sent him to Yemen as a teacher and judge, where he instructed the people in the Qur’an and the teachings of Islam. After the passing of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ, he participated in the Muslim campaigns in al-Sham and later taught in the region. He died during the Plague of ʿAmwās in 18 AH/639 CE. His grave is located at al-Shūnah al-Shamāliyyah in the northern Jordan Valley, within a mosque and shrine complex that also contains a grave attributed to his son, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān.
