Sayyidah Ḥafṣah bint ʿUmar (RA) was the daughter of Sayyiduna ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (RA) and one of the honoured wives of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ, carrying the title Mother of the Believers. After the death of her first husband, Khunays ibn Ḥudhāfah (RA), she married Nabi Muhammad ﷺ in the third year after the Hijrah. She was known for her devotion, fasting, prayer and knowledge, and narrated a number of hadith from Nabi Muhammad ﷺ. She also played an important role in the preservation of the Qur’an. The collected written sheets prepared during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Ṣiddīq (RA) later passed to her, and these were consulted when standard copies of the Qur’an were produced during the caliphate of Sayyiduna ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān (RA). She died in Madinah around 45 AH/665 CE and was buried in Jannat al-Baqīʿ. A late Ottoman-style domed shrine in the northern section of Bāb al-Ṣaghīr Graveyard in Damascus is traditionally attributed to her. However, as historical sources place her burial in Madinah, the Damascus site is best described as a commemorative maqam rather than her confirmed grave.
