Amrit, the ancient Marathos, was a Phoenician town on the coast south of Tartus, founded in the third millennium BC and a rival of nearby Arwad. Abandoned in antiquity, its ruins escaped later rebuilding and are unusually well preserved. The site includes a rock-cut temple with a sacred pool, a stadium, and the two tall funerary towers known locally as the Spindles, standing over burial chambers. It lies a few kilometres south of Tartus near the coast.
