About Home of Ibn Hazm

The Hacienda Montija, located near the city of Huelva, is traditionally identified as the rural estate of Ibn Ḥazm (994–1064), one of al-Andalus’s greatest scholars and men of letters. Born in Córdoba, Ibn Ḥazm came from a distinguished family connected to the Umayyad court. After the political upheavals and decline of the Caliphate, he retired to this estate in his later years, where he continued to write and reflect until his death in 1064. The estate, originally an Andalusī farmhouse, preserves the essence of Islamic architectural design with arched corridors, spacious halls, and a central courtyard surrounded by galleries. These features reflect the refined rural residences of al-Andalus, where architecture and landscape combined harmoniously. Today, the site has been carefully restored and functions as the Hotel Hacienda Montija, blending modern comfort with echoes of its Andalusī past. The hacienda thus stands as both a historic residence linked to Ibn Ḥazm’s life and a living reminder of Andalusī rural culture, where estates provided not only sustenance but also a retreat for study, writing, and contemplation.
