The Baños Califales, often called the Arabian Baths, are one of the finest surviving examples of Córdoba’s Islamic bathhouses (hammams). Built in the 10th century under the rule of Caliph al-Hakam II, they formed part of the palatial complex of the Umayyad Alcázar and served the sovereign, his court, and visiting dignitaries. Like all hammams of al-Andalus, the Baños Califales were not only places of hygiene but also centres of social and cultural life, where relationships were fostered, agreements made, and community bonds strengthened. At their height, Córdoba had many such bathhouses, reflecting both the city’s prosperity and the Islamic emphasis on cleanliness and purification. Rediscovered in 1903 during excavations near the vanished Umayyad palace, the baths were later filled in and only properly excavated from 1961 onwards. After extensive restoration, they were opened to the public as a museum in 2006. Visitors can walk through the preserved sequence of spaces: the apodyterium (changing room), the cold, warm, and hot rooms, and the furnace and service areas. Star-shaped skylights, elegant marble columns, and carved capitals recreate the refined atmosphere of al-Andalus. An adjoining Andalusí-style garden evokes the connection between water, nature, and spiritual wellbeing. Today, the Baños Califales allow visitors to immerse themselves in the daily life of Umayyad Córdoba, offering not only architectural beauty but also an authentic glimpse into the city’s Islamic culture of bathing, sociability, and refinement.
