Yanbu al-Nakhl is the old oasis of Yanbu, inland from the port, known for its springs and palm groves. It was a stop for pilgrims travelling between the coast and Madinah, and its old settlement of mud and stone houses grew up around the springs. The remains of the old town lie among the palm groves of Yanbu al-Nakhl, about 40 km inland from Yanbu. It is one of the sites of the Egyptian Hajj Road, which Saudi Arabia has placed on UNESCO's Tentative List.
