This mosque in Zeinhom has been honoured in Cairo for centuries as the maqam of Sayyiduna Ali Zayn al-Abidin, son of Sayyiduna al-Husayn ibn Ali and the only one of his sons to survive Karbala. Sayyiduna Zayn al-Abidin is buried in al-Baqi' in Madinah, and the mosque takes his name and gives it to the surrounding quarter. The shrine stands inside the mosque, and old graves surround the building. It lies south-west of the mosque of Sayyida Zaynab.
