The Baron Empain Palace was built between 1907 and 1911 for the Belgian industrialist Édouard Empain, who founded the district of Heliopolis. Its design by the French architect Alexandre Marcel was inspired by the Hindu temples of Angkor Wat and Orissa. The palace has been restored and opened as a museum of the history of Heliopolis. It stands in its garden on al-Orouba Street, on the way to the airport.
