Wadi al-Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, is a UNESCO World Heritage site in the desert west of Fayoum, where hundreds of fossil skeletons of early whales lie in the open, some 40 million years old. A small museum and a walking trail of a few kilometres lead between the fossils. It is reached by four-wheel drive through the Wadi al-Rayan protected area, and is best visited early in the day.
