Mahmud Sami al-Barudi was a soldier and statesman who served briefly as prime minister of Egypt in 1882, but he is remembered above all as the poet who restored the strength of classical Arabic poetry and opened the way for Ahmad Shawqi and Hafiz Ibrahim. He passed away in 1904. His grave is in the Qarafa south of the Citadel.
