Uthman ibn Sa'id al-Misri, known as Warsh, travelled from Egypt to Madinah to learn the Qur'an from Imam Nafi', who gave him his nickname. His transmission of Nafi's reading spread from Egypt across North and West Africa, where it is still the reading of most Muslims. He passed away in Egypt in 197 AH. His grave is in the Qarafa a short walk north of the mausoleum of Imam al-Shafi'i, near the grave of al-Muzani.
