The two rock-cut temples of Abu Simbel were carved for Ramesses II and his queen Nefertari, with four colossal seated statues at the entrance of the great temple. In the 1960s both temples were cut apart and moved higher up to save them from the waters of Lake Nasser. Abu Simbel lies far to the south of Aswan near the Sudanese border and is reached by road or air, usually on a day trip that starts before dawn.
